The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to remain there for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
