Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
